Baroness Verma was born in Punjab, India, moving to the UK with her parents as a child. She attended local schools and university in Leicester for psychology and business. She was a very bright and popular student just as she is a bright and popular leader today in UK.

A highly successful entrepreneur, Lady Verma started her first business at the age of 19 in high fashion, supplying high street multiples. In 2000, she changed her business to the social service sector and went into auxiliary care. Her Social Service achievements are widely talked about in India today.
Though she may have joined the Conservative Party in 1999, but she is most modern in outlook. In 2006, she was raised to the peerage as Baroness Verma of Leicester in the County of Leicestershire. She was Opposition Whip from 2006-2010 and then Government Whip following the 2010 General Election.
Prior to becoming Parliamentary under Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in September 2012, Baroness Verma was Spokesperson for Cabinet Office, International Development, Women and Equality and Business Innovation and Skills. She was a brilliant spokesperson because she is a very articulate leader, as you all must have noticed today.
In her country of birth, two ladies are today recognized as the two most effective “Men” to have served the British Cabinet with distinction. One is, of course, Baroness Thatcher. The other is, of course, you have guessed it right – Baroness Verma
